The History of the Copyright

The idea of the Copyright has a very interesting history. One might think that given its importance and power in today’s society that its development as a concept would be straight-forward and direct. But in actuality, the copyright as we know it came into being moreso as an indirect result of the politics of control and the fear of an educated populous.

It all begins with the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg sometime in the year 1440. As the invention became more and more popular throughout europe, a great many Crowns and religious institutions began to see them as a threat to their positions and power. At that time, the dissemination of knowledge came solely from the church. In fact, during this time the church was the institution responsible for educating the masses. But not everyone received the education they had to give. Education was a privilege of the wealthy and elite, or those committed to a life in the church.

The epic battle of the Image: Raster versus Vector

Images are everywhere in our lives: on our televisions, on our computer screens, in our mail boxes, on buses, signs, lamp posts, store windows, the list can go on and on.

But as individuals that are involved in the economy of those images – designers and publishers – there are a few basic notions about these images that we need to know. The most important and basic of which is that of the raster image versus the vector image.

Moving forward!

Why is it so important for your organization to keep its visual themes moving forward? The answer is simple: Standing still is the same as falling backward. You have to keep your organization’s offerings out in the forefront (especially in hard economic times… more on this later!). Not having constant visual cues means people forget about your product or are distracted by what is new with your competitors.

Maintaining a consistent visual theme is an everyday task. Each interaction point of your company needs to state the same message over and over again: this is you!
